Animal Photo of the Week: Bernie

 

Over the years, we’ve witnessed the callous way the dairy industry treats newborn males, and Bernie was no exception. Born on a California dairy in 1996, this Jersey steer was abandoned as a calf at a livestock auction when he failed to sell for even a dollar. His friends Hugo, Edward, Boris, and Hank had similar stories and were only days old when they came to our California Shelter the year before. Over the last 15 years, we’ve watched these sweet boys flourish and develop into independent adults who are now some of our oldest West Coast sanctuary residents. They are the sweetest and most laidback animals you'll ever meet, and we look forward to keeping them happy and healthy for years to come.
 

Animal Photo of the Week: Noel

 

After pulling over a car that cut him off on the road, a patrol officer with the Morgan Hill, California Police Department heard what he thought was the sound of a baby crying coming from the trunk. Shockingly, upon looking inside, he found a small black and white goat who had been hog-tied, but was still alive and struggling for freedom. A little later, he discovered that the goat had been there for two days without any food and water, let alone adequate air to breathe, and called on local Animal Control for help. Animal Photo of the Week: Juno and Belle

 

Here’s a cute Animal Photo of the Week entry to melt your heart: mother Juno and daughter Belle pausing for a snuggle. Rescued from a situation of severe neglect, Juno and 4 other female goats in late term pregnancy came to our New York Shelter in March, and safely delivered their babies despite their own health issues with the help of our caregiving staff. The second to give birth, Juno brought little Belle and her twin brother Sebastian into the world and they’ve been a little family ever since. After a great start to a life of freedom, Belle and Sebastian, along with their mother, will soon be on their way to Texas, where loving Farm Animal Adoption Network adopters are anxiously awaiting their arrival. We’ll sure miss these sweet goats, but we’re happy to see them find their way to a home of their very own!

Animal Photo of the Week: Daphne

 
 
There’s nothing like the experience of seeing a rescued animal blossom before your eyes. In this sweet photo, Daphne turkey’s incredible spirit shines through as she curiously explores the lush green grass of her new pasture at Farm Sanctuary – free for the first time to simply be herself. Rescued not too long ago, this young turkey had a very difficult start to life. She and a group of 15 chickens were seized from a neglectful area farm by animal control officers after many of the birds in their flock wandered into the road and were fatally struck by cars. Now safe at our New York Shelter, this little cutie is inspiring compassion nationwide as one of the youngest superstars featured as part of our Adopt-A-Turkey Project this year. Animal Photo of the Week: Lester

 

Stunning Lester has been part of our California Shelter cattle herd since 1995 when he was rescued from an auction along with two other calves. The road to recovery was long and tough for the three dehydrated and weak calves and, unfortunately, one did not make it past childhood. However, the two others fared much better and eventually grew into healthy and happy steers. Now at fifteen years old, laid back Lester enjoys the simple aspects of life - relaxing in his pasture and being groomed by friends.

Animal Photo of the Week: Ebez

 

Ebez’s life prior to arriving at Farm Sanctuary was horrifying. Though her “owner” was previously cited for animal abuse, it wasn’t until neighbors spotted escaping animals and heaping dead piles on his property that action was finally taken. In 2003, Ebez and 21 other animals were seized and brought to the New York Shelter. Seven years later, this beautiful goat has fully recovered from her physical ailments. While the mental scars of her former life may never fully dissipate, this brave goat isn’t letting them hold her back as she fully enjoys the peace and quiet of life at sanctuary.
