Here at the California Shelter we take great strides to utilize and respect the land to the fullest by feeding appropriate plant-based compost treats to the pigs, rotating pastures for our herds to graze, and spreading old straw on the pastures to promote the growth of grass. Last fall we even planted numerous fruit trees around the shelter to provide tasty treats for the animals, as well as staff, volunteers and guests. We recently continued this trend by planting a new spiral herb garden at the Visitor Center.
Amazing master gardener and Farm Sanctuary supporter Cheryl Anderson and fellow plant enthusiast Aome St. Laurence graciously gave their time to develop the plans and then visited the shelter for the weekend to put it in place. Using permaculture techniques, they (along with our incredible shelter interns) created the garden with colorful rocks collected from the surrounding pastures. Not only will the garden produce necessary ingredients (such as sage, parsley and cilantro) for intern dinners, but also strawberries and beautiful edible flowers. After visiting with the animals this year, I hope that all of our visitors will take a moment to stop by the new garden and smell the aromatic herbs!
Way to go California Shelter. More power to Cheryl, Aome and all of you. You guys are doing wonderful things.
:)
