Those of you who were not children of the 70s, let me explain.
The Wonder Twins, Zan and Jayna, were superheroes who saved the day by transforming into an animal (Jayna) and anything resembling water (Zan). They would put their fists together, say “Wonder Twin powers — ACTIVATE!,” and then announce their intended transformations (“shape of a sea gull, form of an ice gondola”). Individually they were just normal, everyday heroes; together they were SUPER heroes.
It isn’t a coincidence they use the word “activate” as superheroes and activists are made of the same mettle. We shift our demeanor to suit the situation, be it donning a suit to lobby a legislator or a cow costume to hand out leaflets about the dairy industry. We see a situation that needs our attention, put our heads/hearts/hands together, and take action. The Wonder Twins use two of the most important words in our vocabulary: act and together.
While there is much to be said about the power of one, there is twice as much to say about the power of more than one. When we work together as a team we can accomplish more for animals. Just like with Farm Sanctuary’s Advocacy Campaign Team, aka ACT. ACT is our league of superheroes like you who band together to dismantle factory farms and help make this a more compassionate world.
So buddy-up, find someone to mentor or to be your mentor, or someone to join you when you leaflet or meet with your legislator. You can find your ACTivist Wonder Twin by participating in local Meetup Groups or your closest Walk for Farm Animals or an activist listserve or Facebook group — with today’s technology your Zan doesn’t need to be in the same city as her Jayna.
Adding more voices to our choir gives us strength and resilience. That’s why we are adding more voices to Making Hay, with two new bloggers: Delcianna Winders and Casey Martinson. Delci and Casey are part of Farm Sanctuary's Campaigns Team, battling evil from the Big Easy (aka New Orleans, Louisiana) and Farm Sanctuary's own Bat Cave (aka Watkins Glen, New York) respectively. Read their bios and get to know them through their posts (which will start next week). Together we’ll all make some hay, some super hay.
